Marvin Dames responds to PLP Chairman Bradley Roberts

Nassau, Bahamas - Bradley Roberts of all people should be the last person to offer advice on crime. He is delusional and lacks credibility. While our schools and communities are under siege by gang violence and armed criminals, Bradley Roberts and the PLP continue to cast blame in a desperate attempt to remove the focus from their own failures as the government. Who if I may recall before coming to office convinced Bahamians that they had the answer for crime.

Daily, mothers sit helplessly at home awaiting what now appears to be an inevitable fate—to get the news that they must bury their young sons who have fallen victim to violence and crime. In a rapidly declining economy, homeowners are having to spend their meager earnings on erecting bars or installing alarm systems and CCTV cameras among other security measures to protect their families at night. Business owners are faced with the harsh reality of closing their doors because they cannot depend on the state to keep them safe. And, if that’s not bad enough, our tourism industry is facing constant threat as the level of crime has made it increasingly difficult to guarantee the safety of our visitors. No government prior to this one has received more travel advisories warning their citizens about crime in the Bahamas. And all we continue to get from this government are optics and spin-doctor nonsense.

Mr. Roberts suffers from a severe case of amnesia. He seems to forget that the PLP has been the government for the last five years. However, I am not surprised that he remains stuck in the past. It is clear that he and his government have no real solutions to address the problems we face today. Their constant interference in our law enforcement agencies has totally demoralized and exhausted our men and women in uniform who continue to fight the scourge of crime daily. Today, due to political skullduggery, we have yet to confirm a commodore for the Defense Force and a Deputy Commissioner of Police. How can we be serious about crime, when every decision made by this administration is politically driven? Shame on Mr. Roberts and the PLP.

The FNM will not be distracted by the political antics and posturing by Mr. Roberts. My record as a crime fighter speaks for itself, and Mr. Roberts should know firsthand.
We have laid out just some of our crime plan for the Bahamian public to see that we are committed to restoring law and order on our streets. It is only a matter of time before Mr. Roberts and the PLP are given their ticket to retirement for good.
