Dr. Hubert Minnis, Leader of the Free National Movement (FNM), issued the following statement, reiterating his call for all MP’s to publicly disclose if they have ever received any secured or unsecured loans from the Bank of the Bahamas. Currently, none of the members of the Government party have stepped forward to let the public know. This comes on the heels of news reports stating that many PLP Members of Parliament, including most ministers and their leadership, have yet to file their required financial disclosures:

“This is a very simple question that Bahamians deserve an answer to” Are their leaders accountable to the people they serve, or do their own self-interests – and preservation – come before the people? Accountability and transparency are what our communities want and deserve.“So once again, I’m calling on all members of Parliament to disclose whether they have secure dor unsecured loans with the Bank of the Bahamas.” Their silence is deafening – and troubling! It’s also troubling that many of these same officials have ignored the legally mandated financial disclosure filings elected officials are obligated to submit. What are they hiding? The people of the Bahamas deserve to know. Especially when the Bank of the Bahamas continues to call on taxpayers to bail them out even as the bank chairman admits that some of their lending is politically influenced.

“It’s no wonder Bahamian’s don’t trust their Government particularly this government with a history of scandal after scandal. The time for transparency is here. The people deserve accountability, and deserve to know what their leaders are hiding.”
