The Free National Movement is completely committed to assisting the Government and all stakeholders in any and all matters of critical importance to the well-being of Bahamians and in the best interests of our Bahamas.  In this regard, in light of the shocking news that Baha Mar has filed for bankruptcy protection in the United States of America, which has adversely affected the Baha Mar project and imperiled the jobs of thousands of Bahamians and the economy of our Nation, I have accepted The Prime Minister’s invitation to the Official Opposition to meet with him on the matter.

In order for us to have a meaningful and substantive discussion we will request that the government provide us with access to all information and documents including all agreements, minutes of board meetings and minuted discussions between the relevant stakeholders including but not limited to the Government of The Bahamas, China State Construction Co, Export-Import Bank of China, and Baha Mar. These documents would assist us to better appreciate the details surrounding the decision of the Baha Mar bankruptcy petition.

The Free National Movement deeply regrets that this mega development project has come to such an impasse as filing bankruptcy.  Of particular concern to us is the   well-being and job security of the thousands of Bahamians employed by Baha Mar and the plight now faced by the many thousands more Bahamians who have looked to Baha Mar as their means of escape and survival  from the harsh circumstances of chronic high unemployment levels and  increased taxation.
While it is our view that this unfortunate recent development is shocking, disquieting, alarming and unacceptable to all Bahamians, this national dilemma is bigger than political  differences and we will remind the Prime Minister that his expressed desire for a bi-partisan approach would have been more readily appreciated and met with less cynicism if the government had, from the outset of the Baha Mar Project, observed higher standards of transparency by communicating with the public and the Official Opposition.  It is our hope that the Prime Minister’s feeling of being blindsided by the actions taken by Baha Mar  would cause him to have  a greater appreciation and better understanding of the need at all times for full disclosure and transparency in matters of State such as this.

Unlike the government, who take "NO SIDE," we in the Free National Movement are firmly committed to and will remain ON THE SIDE OF BAHAMIANS, Baha Mar  WORKERS and THE NATIONAL INTEREST of the Bahamas.  Our sole interest in this matter is the completion of the Baha Mar project and towards this end we are making arrangements to meet with all stakeholders in the Baha Mar project to explore solutions and give our support for an early resumption of this project.

The Free National Movement remains committed to ensuring that the Government accounts to the Bahamian people and we will insist that the Government be frank, open, honest and transparent in dealing with this unfortunate national tragedy.
We will also insist that the government do all that is necessary to safeguard the income, security and wealth of our land to the benefit of all Bahamians.
