Nassau, The Bahamas - The PLP has launched an all out attack on our time honoured
legal system and our established branches of Government to cover-up their
misdeeds and wrongdoings. Over the past
weeks the Prime Minister has made decisions which have been contrary to good
governance, and he has refused to take responsibility and be accountable for
the actions of persons within his government.
The PLP believe that they are above the law; and that the
rules, which everyone else must follow, do not apply to them. The Judicial and
Legislative branches have both been the subject of an all out assault and in a
few short weeks the PLP has potentially caused irreparable damage to these foundation stones of our constitutional
system of government, just to save their colleagues and friends.
The Free National Movement will do all within its power to
protect and defend democracy and fully perform our role of holding the PLP
accountable.
The Free National Movement is appalled but not surprised at
the PLP cover-up and legal gymnastics used to prevent one of their own from
being placed before a court of law. The
PLP has twice usurped the jurisdiction of a court of law by what a Magistrate alledges
was "intimidation" and now by preventing that very same issue from
being properly and fairly adjudicated by a court.
We in the FNM maintain that V. Alfred Gray should have been
fired from the Cabinet once the allegations became a police matter and we
maintain that the allegations should have been decided in a court of competent
jurisdiction, and not by Gray's Cabinet friend and colleague.
We will not be silent nor will we stand idly by while the
judicial system is compromised by the PLP.
It will not happen in our Bahamas!
There cannot be one law for a Cabinet Minister and another if
you are an ordinary citizen. No more PLP
favours for PLP members, colleagues and friends!
We in the Free National Movement will be relentless in
defending good governance, transparency and the Rule of Law. This cover up government must go! Gray must go!
The Speaker today suspended opposition members of Parliament
because they stood up to prevent Alfred Gray from speaking as a Cabinet
Minister because they, like many Bahamians, feel that Gray should have been
fired because of his interference in the judiciary.
Again Bahamians have witnessed the same callous abuse of
parliamentary power which power was similarly abused to suppress and to
frustrate the work of the Public Accounts Committee.
We remind Perry Christie and the PLP that "might does
not make right!"
