Nassau, The Bahamas - The following is a statement by Senator Michael C. Pintard:

Following an intense debate in The House of Assembly yesterday, Free National Movement Leader Dr. Hubert A. Minnis persuaded the Christie Administration to provide employment opportunities for 17 young Bahamian medical students who will be seeking jobs upon completion of their medical examinations this year.

According to Dr. Minnis, there are 45 Bahamian medical students preparing to complete their final medical examinations in June of this year. However, of the 45, he noted that only 28 would be accommodated thereby leaving 17 talented Bahamians whose services are needed throughout our system to fend for themselves.

The Leader of the Opposition criticized the current government for spending $530,000 in re-hiring retired civil servants, and further blasted the Christie Administration for its intention to invest at least 9 million dollars into the upcoming Junkanoo Carnival, which he believes are monies that could be invested in more meaningful ways.

“There is $9m being wasted on Carnival. Which is more important? These young people who represent the future of our country versus the Carnival that you are trying to introduce,” asked Dr. Minnis. It should be noted that the Christie administration has hired an unprecedented number of consultants within the public service and has failed to indicate how many and at what cost to tax payers.

Dr. Minnis’ firm critique resulted in sharp feedback from various PLP Members of Parliament, and Prime Minister Christie who said that his government has “now introduced a bond system where there is a requirement when they educate, they go to rural areas of this country where necessary.” However, in the face of Dr. Minnis’ challenge the Minister of Health Dr. Perry Gomez did not utter a word.

In the final analysis Mr. Christie noted that despite previous claims of the government not having enough money to employ the young Bahamians, all 45 medical students would be accommodated. I commend Dr Minnis and his team and we await the Christie Administration’s full and frank explanation for a lavish opening ceremony of the Critical Care Block at the Princess Margaret Hospital despite knowing that crucial areas are still not ready for operation. This approach to governance by Christie is reminiscent of the ceremonial opening of BAMSI, the launch of the Mortgage Relief Program, the Introduction of Safe Bahamas and the breaking of ground for the Straw Market. These schemes prove that the PLP is long on Promises and PR but short on Productivity.
