Remarks From The Hon. Philip Brave Davis MP Leader of the Opposition 19 August 2018 on Recent Public Issues
 
Today I have called you here to challenge you and the public to demand answers from The Bahamas government, the Prime Minister and the Attorney General in particular about the conduct of his Government and the agents of the state.

It has been more than 48 hours since the affidavit I saw filed in the Shane Gibson matter made allegations of serious misconduct on the part of the prosecution.  There has been no reply from the Government.
 
At the very least this demands a word from the Government that they have not been involved in prosecutorial misconduct.  I would not believe their denial but at the very least for the record they need to say whether it is true. Further, that they have not authorized agents of the state to pervert the course of justice.
 
Beyond that they ought to have told the country that given the serious nature of the allegations, they have begun an immediate investigation to determine the truth or otherwise of the allegations.

I have heard the audio tapes. I have read the affidavits.  It is simply shocking.
 
I have called for a Commission of Inquiry into this matter and the resignation of the Government.

This matter of the audio files and the allegations of perverting the course of justice come against the background of a number of serious breaches of rules of governance and the continued deterioration of living conditions in our country by a government that simply does not seem to know what it is doing.  It is stumbling from one crisis to the next but going on oblivious to the facts.

I list amongst them:

The fact that scholarships have been and are being denied students who are returning to school.

Despite the assurances of the Prime Minister and the Minister of Education, school opening is expected to be the most chaotic in years.

The hospital continues to deteriorate in its service of the public. Dr. Duane Sands is walking around announcing the rise in prices but he can’t even keep the hospital clean. There is no excuse.  I have a feeling that people are dying because they are poor.  He is talking about raising prices when service is getting worse.

The public health issues in terms of the cleanliness of the country continue to be of concern.

Telecommunications in the country seem to be deteriorating without anyone paying attention at the governmental level.

The power supply through BPL is in the midst of chaos and the Minister refuses to account to the public for the dismissal of the Board and reports that cronyism is at the heart of the troubles of the corporation.

People have also been asking whether the Holowesko family has a hold on the FNM with yet another one being given a position on a government Board.
