Dr. Andre Rollins, Shadow Minister of National Security Statement in response to The Nassau Guardian Article Of November 25, 2015:

The Acting Prime Minister in his response to my call for a Cabinet shuffle demonstrated exactly what is wrong about the governance of this country under the PLP. The Cabinet represents the executive branch of government and it is this group of individuals that is constitutionally mandated to superintend the affairs of the state on behalf of all Bahamians – not just PLPs. To be clear, the best course of action to repair the damage done to our country under this government is for them to call a general election to give Bahamians an opportunity to relieve them of their duty. However, this is a course of action that they will not take because their polling data has revealed that if an election were called today the PLP would suffer a massive election defeat at the polls. Recognizing that they will not call an early general election and although I appreciate the valid argument of those who have stated that “shaking up a near empty can is not going to suddenly make the can full,” something, anything must be done that might improve the dreadful performance of this dysfunctional government.

Mr. Davis’ response to my call for a Cabinet shuffle is very telling. Perhaps he is so preoccupied with becoming leader of the PLP that he failed to realize that I was not calling for a shuffle of the PLP’s leadership at convention – that I concede is PLP business. Instead, what I called for is the shuffling of the Cabinet and that is entirely the people’s business, which they have every right to expect will be handled with far more competence, transparency and accountability than currently exists. I would like to inform the Acting Prime Minister that only a government engaging in wheeling and dealing would ever describe the affairs of state as PLP business. However, this is exactly what he implies when he says that I ought not suggest how to “order his house” and that I should “stay out of our business in our home”.

I wish to remind the Acting Prime Minister that Parliament is the people’s House and the PLP is only temporarily in charge of our affairs. They are not there to do so for the sole benefit of themselves and a few supporters of the PLP. Sadly, it is clear for all to see and hear that the people’s business is not the focus of this PLP government – it is PLP business that they are concerned with – whatever that means. All well meaning Bahamians who care about this country’s future must recognize that if we leave them in charge much longer, when they are through with us, we will collectively have no more house to call our own and we will continue to be ignored like the thousands of Bahamians who were promised mortgage relief by the PLP and since forgotten.
