Roberts: Dr. Minnis' Courting of Izmirlian and Symonette Spells Disaster for The Bahamas

From Dr. Hubert Minnis’ public courting of Brent Symonette to return to front line politics, Bahamians must be wondering why Minnis is seeking to reassemble the “Stop, Cancel and Review” team which brought this country to its economic knees, ultimately placing it in a wheel chair.

The emergence of the disgruntled Sarkis Izmarlin and his loyalists who were conveniently parachuted into the leadership of the FNM by an act of fascism by Dr. Minnis creates a toxic mix that can only spell dire economic straits and ultimate collapse of the Bahamian economy under an FNM government.  From all indications, Sarkis’ singular objective is the “Stop, Review AND Cancel” of the on again Baha Mar project.

The Bahamian people can ill afford this impending doom given the fact that Minnis and Symonette presided over the most spectacular economic decline of this country’s economy since the Great Depression. To date, Minnis and the FNM has not taken any responsibility for the part they played in this calamity. Sarkis only wants to scuttle and destroy Baha Mar.

We understand clearly that Minnis’ motivation for being joined to the hips with Sarkis is financial convenience, plain and simple and in return, he apparently agreed to a hostile takeover of the FNM by Sarkis and his loyalists in exchange for money. But why is Dr. Minnis publicly courting Brent Symonette?

The only logical reason is Minnis’ desperation for more money to fund the FNM’s election campaign. In light of the following facts, why would Minnis even be bothered with Symonette other than for his money?

1. Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham revealed in a Wiki Leaks interview with the US Embassy in the Bahamas that he was saddled with Symonette as his Deputy Prime Minister and had no confidence in him.

2. During the FNM’s July convention, Brent Symonette openly rejected Dr. Minnis as Leader and openly supported Loretta Butler Turner.

3. Symonette exposed the financial fragility of the FNM and its challenges to pay for that convention.

4.The disgraced Symonette was caught red-handed self-dealing on multiple occasions including the airport runway contract, the relocation of the container port and the New Providence Road Improvement project. Symonette was fired as Chairman of the Airport Authority for self-dealing.

5.Symonette was a failure as Tourism Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister. His “Hip to Hop to the Bahamas Campaign” is still today regarded on Madison Avenue as the biggest marketing promotional flop in recent history.

6.Symonette is “Mr. Market Forces.” He feels market forces should prevail while Minnis has marketed himself as the champion of the small man so why is he inviting Mr. Big Business into his bosom?

Money is the only logical conclusion. Sarkis is seeking retribution and Symonette represents big business so how is Minnis going to “Look out for the small man?” he cannot! He is conflicted! He is seeking to make 2 deals with the devil in exchange for money.

With this conflicted toxic mix, concerned Bahamians are now wondering aloud what a tragedy the FNM as a Government would be:-

1. The FNM is known for its disastrous “Stop, Cancel and Review” policy.

2. The FNM has been bought lock, stock and barrel by Sarkis Izmarlin who has assembled his own peculiar band of candidates into the FNM machine.

3.With the return of Brent Symonette the country can rest assured that Minnis will have all of the components of his Stop Cancel and Review team in place to run havoc and amok on the Baha Mar development and plunge this country in an economic nightmare.

Judging from his leadership decisions and actions, we do not see clarity of vision or the political will in Dr. Minnis to look out for ordinary Bahamians. The agenda of these two men have nothing to do with the people's business.

We in the PLP shall remain vigilant and focused and we shall lose no opportunity to alert and inform the Bahamian people of what Minnis, Izmarlin and Brent Symonette have cooked up for them.
