Roberts: Minnis’ BAMSI comments encourages “ignorance in leadership”

Nassau, Bahamas - Enclosed is a statement by Bradley B. Roberts National Chairman, Progressive Liberal Party:

The comments in the media today that were attributed to Dr. Minnis and associated with his trip to BAMSI in North Andros on Sunday demonstrate that he is committed to peddling ignorance in leadership as he lacks a working knowledge of the policies of the government of which he is a part and wants to lead. The Tribune headline story about his BAMSI trip is misleading and filled with material inaccuracies principally because of him.

It is a well known fact that Dr. Minnis is clueless about any plan to address the pressing issues currently facing this country, but is it asking too much for the leader of the Opposition to educate himself on government policy, especially after several public fora were hosted to provide public education on BAMSI?

Here he was in the media again today complaining, bitching, moaning and intentionally misleading the public about the operations of BAMSI. Not only did he fail to notify the member for North Andros of his visit to BAMSI, but putting bio-safety aside, he also failed to notify the management of the institute as a common courtesy, virtually ensuring that ignorance and misinformation in the public domain would prevail.

But more fundamentally, what are his plans for addressing food security for The Bahamas, this country’s high food import bill, economic diversification and jobs creation? Going further, has he developed a plan for tax reform yet or is he still hiding in the tall grasses and denying that the FNM agreed on VAT. How does Minnis envision the structure and function of the gaming industry going forward or does he even have an inkling about what energy sector reform looks like?

This PLP government for its part under the leadership of the Rt. Hon. Perry G. Christie has boldly and fearlessly addressed all of the major issues facing this country and more specifically, the government is quickly addressing the vexing issues of food security, economic diversification and our outrageously high food import bill. BAMSI is the vehicle through which these national issues will be addressed.

The delegation of agriculture and marine experts from the University of Florida endorsed the BAMSI’s concept and strategy and were impressed with how far the institute and its outreach program had developed in such as short period of time. The visit and interview with Jones Communications is a matter of public record.

For Dr. Minnis’ edification, the University of Florida has one of the best agricultural and marine science programs in the world – a program that is more than one century old. Also for his further edification, BAMSI is on schedule to commence its tutorial program in the Fall of 2014 and yes, there is a marketing plan, a master plan, an outreach plan and a 20 year national plan for agriculture.

So interested in knowing the facts on BAMSI was Dr. Minnis, that he made sure the management of BAMSI was NOT around when he visited there because his personal agenda was to create political mischief through the spreading of misinformation and material inaccuracies in the public domain. Misinformation and material inaccuracies about government policies can only have the effect of undermining the same.

This is terrible for an opposition leader to be a part of as it strikes at the root of his credibility both as a person and leader.
