Nassau, Bahamas - The following is a press statement by Bradley B. Roberts National Chairman Progressive Liberal Party:

It is now not only Brent Symonette but practically the entire leadership of the FNM who would NOT deny themselves any opportunity to attack The Bahamas and its people.

This type of irresponsible behavior and abject failure of the FNM to stand up for Bahamians and this country that is sure to take The Bahamas back more than fifty years.

History has recorded that former Deputy Prime Minister Brent Symonette was a failed Minister of Tourism; a failed Foreign Minister and is well known for engaging in blatant and multiple conflicts between his public duty to the Bahamian people and his personal business interests. When faced with these conflicting choices, Symonette has always chosen to protect his personal business interests over the public interest.

SYMONETTE IS THEREFORE EMINENTLY UNQULIFIED TO SPEAK ON THE WELFARE OF BAHAMIANS AND HIS PRONOUNCEMENTS SHOULD BE DISMISSED OUT OF HAND.

Serial loser Dr. Duane Sands commented that my statement last week on Brent Symonette could set our Country back 50 years is unfounded. Dr. Sand only needs to read the statement released by the US Embassy last Thursday to appreciate that a sovereign Bahamas, like the United States, has a responsibility to protect its citizens and to so advise them in these circumstances according to law.

The response of Dr. Sands, Dr. Rollins and Mr. Symonette again clearly indicate a growing and deepening conflict and division within the FNM.

The FNM’s shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Hubert Chipman, supported the government on its travel advisory as reasonable and this issue should have ended there. In the wake of unfortunate shootings in Minnesota, Dallas and Baton Rouge involving African Americans and the police that sparked protests and civil unrest, the government of The Bahamas wisely cautioned Bahamians travelling to the United States (and the Bahamian Diaspora) to exercise extreme caution in affected cities and in their interactions with the police. The PLP again publicly expresses its support for this government policy.

It is abundantly clear from the rhetoric emanating from the leadership of the FNM that if given the opportunity, they would govern our Bahamas as if we lived in the 1950’s where they would instruct Bahamians not to be assertive, independent and confident, but to be weak kneed apologists. Lord help us all.
