L. Ryan Pinder
Member of Parliament, Elizabeth
Remarks at Yamacraw Constituency Headquarters Opening
February 13, 2012
Good evening,
Tonight we are here to celebrate the opening of the Yamacraw Constituency Headquarters and lend our support to my “Big Sister” Melanie Griffin, the 2 time Member of Parliament for Yamacraw. We know there is some confusion about how the Prime Minister drew the constituency boundaries here in the east, but as we know, he can mess with the lines, but he can’t mess with the minds. Regardless of what the Prime Minister thinks he is doing, we will take the east, on election day the east will remain firmly represented by us, the Progressive Liberal Party.
We face similar challenges in the east, whether it be in Yamacraw, Elizabeth, Fox Hill, Sea Breeze, or St. Annes. Our youth are being left behind, they are not being prepared to excel and take advantage of opportunities, the youth are struggling to find employment. This is clear given the recent alarming unemployment statistic - 34% of the youth of the country are unemployed. This is an indictment and evidence of failure of this FNM Government. They have failed to prepare the youth of the Bahamas, the youth in the east, failed to provide jobs for the youth of the country.
We recognize that the youth of the Bahamas is the future of the Bahamas, if we fail to prepare our youth, we fail to plan for the success of our country. We in the East recognize this. Melanie has provided technology improvements for Thelma Gibson Primary School and annual donations to the regional associations to foster community minded initiatives. I commend her for that, learned from my Big Sister and in Elizabeth likewise contributed new computers to enhance the computer lab at Thelma Gibson Primary School to ensure the youth of Elizabeth have the tools to learn. Learning from Melanie, I replaced the computers in the computer lab at The Elizabeth Estates Children’s Home so the children there can have every opportunity to succeed living in very challenging situations. Likewise, I have acquired new computers to contribute to the community center in Elizabeth Estates. All of this to ensure that the youth of the East, and Elizabeth are given every opportunity to succeed.
The Progressive Liberal Party understands this need on a national level, and as the next Government of the Bahamas proposes a number of initiatives to ensure the youth of the country are prepared to take advantage of opportunities to obtain jobs, and build careers. The PLP as the Government of the Bahamas proposes:
· Career Path Academies to expand vocational and technical training for 15,000 young people every year
· Technology Centers to ensure that most modern technology is available for the youth to learn
· 21st Century Classrooms to ensure our students have the tools necessary to succeed in their education
· Worker Retraining for up to 5,000 Bahamians a year to ensure that Bahamians, and particularly those who are seeking employment, can have the skills necessary to compete in a modern economy.
These are some of the initiatives of the next PLP Government to ensure that our youth are not left behind, to ensure when under our good governance we create a healthy economy, the youth of the Bahamas, the youth of the East, the youth of Elizabeth are prepared to take advantage. The Progressive Liberal Party is the only party with a clear plan for youth empowerment, training and educating the young people of the Bahamas, and I encourage all the youth of the country to join us, as we prepare to govern the Bahamas whenever the election bell is rung. I look forward to working with my Big Sister, Melanie, and all representatives from the East in creating a better country for my and your children. Yamacraw, hit the ground, speak of the PLP’s vision, and brag about your Member of Parliament.
