Sidney Collie, Chairman of the Free National Movement (FNM), issued the following statement:

“Sadly for the Bahamian people they have gotten used to Minister V. Alfred Gray lying to them when he tried to talk his way out of his Magistrate scandal in March of 2015. Now Minister Gray is at it again, one moment Minister Gray says he’s opposed to the Crown land and fishing rights give away, and then the press finds the truth spelled out in a letter Gray sent to the Bahamian Ambassador to China. In his letter, Minister Gray gave the go-ahead on the PLP give away to their Chinese allies. It has gotten so bad for the PLP Government that they can’t keep track of the lies they keep spreading about their secret deals with their Chinese allies. It is perplexing trying to understand, explain and then re-explain again his position and statements on the PLP Government’s proposal to give away 20,000 acres of Crown land and fishing rights to their Chinese allies.”

“Is it any wonder why the Bahamian people have lost all trust and confidence in him and the PLP Government? The truth is a foreign concept to them, and they exhibit incredible contempt for the people they should be serving while gladly giving away our country’s land and fishing rights to their foreign allies.”

“But try as he might, Minister Gray cannot spin his way out of this terrible scheme that he has authorized our Ambassador to China to make. The facts? Gray praised the plan to give the PLP’s Chinese allies 20,000 acres of Crown land. The PLP’s rationale that Bahamians are not interested in farming is contemptible and flies in the face of the Government spending upwards of $100 million to train Bahamians to farm at BAMSI. Next, Gray approved and authorized the negotiations to give away the rights to fish our waters to the Chinese. It doesn’t take much work to understand the Chinese have been irresponsible fishermen destroying ecosystems around the world with their fishing practices. So why would we need Chinese experts to tell Bahamians how to fish; we have been fishing these waters for decades.”

“Instead of insulting Bahamians with their ridiculous comments suggesting Bahamians are not interested in farming and that we need experts to show us how to fish, the PLP Government should be investing in Bahamian farmers and fishermen, not giving away our economic assets to their Chinese allies. Minister Gray should immediately apologize to the Bahamian people and then publicly draft a letter to our Ambassador to China rescinding this Government’s desire to give away our land and fisheries and therefore stop these ill-conceived negotiations. Only if this Government continues to be more interested in putting their Chinese allies over the needs of the Bahamian people, will they ignore this call to action. But rest assured, the FNM will not stop until all the details of the PLP’s secret scheming over Baha Mar comes to light.”
