Nassau, Bahamas - Sidney Collie, Chairman of the Free National Movement (FNM), issued the following statement:

“What does it take for this Government to stop its ill-advised efforts to give away 20,000 acres of Crown land and our fishing rights to the Chinese Government?  Even with the enormous outrage from the people, Minister V. Alfred Gray plows ahead with his negotiations undeterred by the will of the people they serve.  Their Chinese allies must be very impressed with their resolve to ignore Bahamians.  It’s the kind of loyalty only money can buy.  Questioned during a press conference on Wednesday about whether the proposal was still being pursued with the Chinese, Minister Gray stated he has not rescinded his letter of support for the proposal.  Public uproar, calls for his resignation, and thousands of Bahamians signing a petition against this give away be damned, Minister Gray continues to move forward with this scandalous proposal that would do irrevocable damage to our people and their birth right.”

“He continues to offend the Bahamian people every day that he continues to support this proposal and refuses to resign.  Sadly Minister Gray’s actions have become common place to the Bahamian people who know Gray’s allegiances lie with foreign allies, not to the people he should serve.”

“Having been caught in a web of lies as he accused the media of lying about his proposal, Minister Gray has no credibility.  So instead of insulting Bahamians with his ridiculous comments suggesting Bahamians are not interested in farming and that we need Chinese experts to show us how to fish our waters, Minister Gray should resign and end any and all actions on his proposal.  The FNM will continue to stand with the Bahamian people in their fight for their Crown land and fishing rights no matter the excessive excuses, empty promises and side-show distractions the PLP Government tries to use.”
