Nassau, Bahamas - Sidney Collie, Chairman of the Free National Movement (FNM), issued the following statement on the appointment of the DNA Leader as Leader of Opposition Business in the Senate:

“Once again today, the Bahamian people witnessed another back room political deal that ignores the will of the people so career politicians can take power for themselves. Career politicians decided that they did not need to listen to the voice of the people and cut a backroom deal to further their political ambitions. We have seen these types of secret backroom deals from the PLP Government these past four and a half years as they have sold away our land and birth rights to their Chinese allies, and once again we are seeing more secret deals from career politicians.”

“As we have previously seen from Prime Minister Christie, statements were made and refusal to answer questions persisted. These secret deals being made by career politicians beg for questions to be asked. What promises were made to each side in the dark of night? How long have they been in discussions’ to silence the voices of the Bahamian people?”

“The FNM re-affirms its commitment to the people and to progress. We cannot allow the career politicians – the keepers of the status quo – whether ruling this government or hiding themselves under the FNM banner to put the status quo above the needs of Bahamians. That is what we saw today, but rather than deter us as a party it only strengthens our resolve to step forward and carry the voice of every family and community that is crying out for change. Recently they marched in our streets because they are tired of being ignored by the career politicians. They no longer want the old guard that seeks to pick winners and losers while grasping onto the reins of power in order to serve themselves.”

“We will continue to fight for the Bahamian people every day and reject secret backroom deals made by career politicians regardless of the color they try to represent. The FNM’s torch will bring light to the secrecy that has permeated the Government these past four and a half years and the last week, we will bring accountability and transparency back to The Bahamas.”
