Nassau, Bahamas - Sidney Collie, Chairman of the Free National Movement (FNM), issued the following statement:

A government’s job is to serve the people – ALL the people. The Family Islands’ needs and challenges are just as important as the rest of the country. True leaders understand this and keep focused on every part of the country. Unfortunately, that is not the case with this PLP Government, and with the embattled Prime Minister himself finally admitting publicly what many families – especially in the Family Islands – have known for years: his PLP Government has not paid as much attention to the developments on the Family Islands.

“His excuse? That his secret dealings on Baha Mar have distracted him. The embattled Prime Minister should understand that this is a cop out, not an excuse. He was – and the PLP – were duly elected to serve the entire country, not just certain parts that draw their attention from time to time. Sadly that has been the case for nearly five years though, with this PLP Government focusing on helping themselves at our expense. Their lack of focus and outright negligence has lead to disastrous consequences for the people – putting our economy on the brink with rating agencies downgrading our nation’s credit rating to junk bond status.

“Change is coming, the time is now. The FNM will continue to fight for all Bahamians, no matter where they live. While the PLP has focused on picking winners and losers, the FNM will fight everyday to lift all of our people and make all Bahamians winners. We will not be a government for just one island but a government for all the islands. It is time that the Bahamian people had a Government that puts the people first, instead of enriching themselves at our expense. And the FNM will lead the way, because it truly understands that this is the people’s time.”
