Sidney Collie, Free National Movement (FNM) Chairman, issued the following statement regarding the petition in circulation to fire Cabinet members Jerome Fitzgerald and Allyson Maynard-Gibson:

“The PLP has turned government corruption into an art form.  We are not a lawless nation, but this Government feels that they are above the law. The indifference the embattled Prime Minister and his cohorts show to these clear violations of the law would be breathtaking if the people had not been subjected to five years of this rampant corruption.  After revelations that Jerome Fitzgerald held conflicts of interests with Baha Mar, we now learn that his family was awarded a contract from NIB less than two months after he was elected. There was no tender; there was no competition, only political favors being handed to corrupt politicians.

“This begs the question; how can Prime Minster Christie ignore the abuse of power and position from his high command while Bahamians struggle to compete for business against the politically connected? Even PLP candidate Dr. Charles Clarke has said that in any other first world society, Jerome Fitzgerald would have already resigned.  And on More 94 FM, Belinda Wilson—president of the Bahamas Unions of Teachers—said Jerome has done nothing for education, but was only interested in photo ops and begging investors for favors.

“But how has the Prime Minister responded? He embraces tyranny, digging his heels deeper into the mud of corruption that that leaves a dark mark on our entire country. Standing on stage last night, the Prime Minister praised Jerome Fitzgerald and commended his performance, taking Bahamians for fools by claiming accusations to be ‘fake news’. While the Prime Minister’s ineptitude and neglect of responsibility comes to no surprise, Bahamians will not stand silently.  The FNM is working with them to have their voices heard, circulating a petition calling on the Prime Minister and the PLP to fire their unethical cabinet ministers immediately.  No more delays, no more silence, no more distractions.  Act now and show the world we are not some lawless country.  We encourage all Bahamians to weigh in and sign on.

“We join with Bahamians that are appalled by these latest scandals and demand accountability by going to firedem.com. and sign the petition.  Together we will send this corrupt Government a message and prevent Prime Minister Christie from further damaging our beloved country with the upcoming election”.
