Nassau, Bahamas - Dr. Minnis, Leader of the Free National Movement (FNM), issued the following statement on the FNM’s Inner City Economic Initiative:

“Our Over-the-Hill communities have suffered for decades under PLP disinterest. The PLP Leaders who should represent these areas have all but ignored it. But this upcoming election gives the people here a chance at a new beginning.”

“I grew up in these communities shining shoes and sewing pants, I know what it will take to revitalize our communities. Our ‘Change Team’ has strong candidates that will step up and represent these communities, from Travis Robinson in Bain and Grants Town, to Reece Chipman in Centreville, and Mark Humes in Ft. Charlotte. It took weeks for the embattled Prime Minister to even visit his constituencies after Hurricane Matthew but the FNM candidates won’t forget who they represent.”

“Together we will work to transform our Over-the-Hill communities by creating inner city tax free economic zones in impoverished areas such as Bain and Grants Town, Gambier, Centreville, and elsewhere. Our revitalization plans also include providing Bahamians with exemptions from the payment of customs duty, exemption from real property tax and all such taxes. These communities have also suffered dearly since the implementation of the PLP’s onerous VAT tax, including bread basket items that Bahamians need to survive. We will remove the VAT tax from these items because those that are the most in need should not have to shoulder an unfair burden to the Government, especially when they have never seen a return on it.”

“Our ‘Change Team’ of candidates are from all walks of life and will bring those perspectives to an FNM Government. Under an FNM Government our country will be returned to the Bahamian people because ‘It’s the People’s Time.’”
