Peter Turnquest, Deputy Leader of the Free National Movement (FNM) and
MP for East Grand Bahama, issued the following statement on Severance
Pay for former Treasure Bay Casino workers:
“This failing Progressive Liberal Party Government continues to try to
deflect its missteps by talking about what the former Free National
Movement Government did not do. For the most part, the facts are always
clouded. The most recent example is a statement by Tourism Minister
and West End & Bimini Member of Parliament, Obie Wilchcombe,
published in Tuesday’s
FREEPORT NEWS related to outstanding severance pay for the Treasure Bay
Casino workers who were let go on December 4th of this year.
Wilchcombe, rather than see to it that these workers are paid, states
that when the Isles of Capri Casino closed years ago during the FNM
administration, workers were not paid severance. Nothing can be further
from the truth. And the Minister knows better.
“The closure of Isles of Capri was executed in an orderly fashion. The
relevant government ministers at the time, Finance, Tourism and Labour,
all met with the then employees, relayed their transition options and
the FNM government saw to it that severance pay was a priority item.
The workers were in fact paid. Time is running out on Wilchcombe and
his uncaring and inept PLP government.
“For four long and miserable years, all Grand Bahama residents have been
offered are empty promises from a do nothing government. The former
Treasure Bay Casino employees do not need the minister's song and dance,
they simply demand their severance pay packages which they are entitled
to by law. The frustration and suffering seem endless under this
Christie-led Government. We need change. The Free National Movement
represents that change. We will stop at nothing to see to it that the
former Treasure Bay Casino workers are paid.”
