The following is a statement by Peter Turnquest, FNM Deputy Leader:

After almost four years to the date and multiple failures in office, rather than address the issue raised by the Free National Movement with respect to the health and safety of Bahamian children, Mr. Roberts seeks to play the blame game and in the process condemns his own Party by pointing out the obvious neglect in the maintenance of government buildings and other infrastructure throughout The Bahamas since 2012. The issues Mr. Roberts should be addressing as it relates to infrastructure include:

- The status of the building reconstruction and recovery of public funds following the BAMSI fire, which are at risk due to the PLP’s complete and utter failure to follow standard practice in awarding such contracts.

- The cost overruns on the Bridge Authority Building renovations due to the PLP’s own brand of “stop review and cancel” that have partly resulted in a 100% increase in bridge tolls.

- The lack of progress at the Nassau City Dump.

- The status of the general Post Office Buildings in Nassau and Grand Bahama, which have exposed hard working civil servants to health risks from rodents, mold and other hazards.

- The status of the Rodney L. Bain Building purchased by the National Insurance Building, which remain abandoned.

- The upgrades to the Rand Memorial Hospital and the promised new hospital in Grand Bahama, the absence of which has left critical bed shortages.

- The Mold remediation and outstanding renovations to the Garnet Lavarity Justice Centre in Grand Bahama which is incomplete.

- The Mold remediation at the C. A. Smith Administrative Complex.

- The National Insurance Complex in Grand Bahama that has been neglected since the Bahamas Customs relocated along with Social Services. Accommodations for these offices are currently being rented from a private entity, which arguably creates a conflict of interest with a sitting Cabinet Minister.

- The ongoing rodent problem and disrepair at the Eight Mile Rock High School

- The lack of progress in restoring the infrastructure, including the Airport Terminal in Crooked Island following the latest hurricane.

- The mold and infrastructure repairs needed to the Health Clinic in Acklins.

- The road and bridge repairs and resurfacing necessary in Acklins.

- The immediate problem with the lack of potable water in Eleuthera.

We could go on and on but NO Mr. Roberts, you get no additional credit for doing what is expected of any government and the Free National Movement in opposition for the time being, will not let up on pointing out your failures and mismanagement of the infrastructure in the country.

As for his statements about “planned” infrastructure for West Grand Bahama, we are not fooled by political promises and late projects geared at influencing elections. The PLP really should grow up and stop treating our citizens like “jonsers” waiting for another hit. We have grown past these cheap tricks.
