Peter Turnquest, Deputy Leader of the Free National Movement (FNM) and MP for East Grand Bahama, issued the following statement on Minister Gibson’s comments:

“Deflect and refuse to be held accountable – that is what Minister Shane Gibson is trying to do by accusing me and the FNM of not wanting to help Bahamians suffering in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew.  Comments such as Minister Gibson’s do nothing to help the situation and don’t answer the question of how money is being spent in the aftermath of the devastating storm.  The Bahamian people and those international partners donating supplies and money to our relief efforts just want to make sure that it is being used in the most efficient way and going to those most in need.”

“The PLP Government and Minister Gibson refuse to provide any details and his unfounded and foolish comments are not needed in these tough times.  I am on the ground in Grand Bahama every day and see the struggle of our people to recover and without a transparent plan or accounting we have no way to guarantee the PLP Government is doing what they claim.  The PLP Government has a horrible track record of transparency in their dealings with the people’s monies and without transparency from Minister Gibson the people are left to wonder about the relief efforts.”

“As I have previously stated there is an obvious disconnect between Ministers Gibson and those persons impacted by Hurricane Matthew if he does not think they want a transparent process for the distribution of money in the relief efforts.  The FNM is representing the Bahamian people in this process and it is Minister Gibson and the PLP Government who are trying to make absurd accusations of political nature.  It is time for Minister Gibson to stop being a politician and dodging accountability questions and give a transparent account of how the relief efforts are being conducted.”
