Nassau, Bahamas - The Torchbearer’s Youth Association, the youth arm of the Free National Movement, issued the following statement on the announcement of its 2017 National Youth Convention:

“Building on a trajectory of unity, the Torchbearers Youth Association is committed to bringing young people together across the archipelago of The Bahamas in a show of solidarity, nationalism and activism. Our association is committed to highlighting and developing the skills and talents of our young people through research, technology and innovation in all aspects and from all walks of life. The Torchbearers Youth Association, or TYA, has a constant focus on the matters that will influence and affect young people, including matters related to health care, technology, entrepreneurship, separation of the classes, and continuing a legacy started by our forefathers many years ago who yearned for a better Bahamas and a brighter future for themselves and the generations to come.

“As such, we are proud to announce that the Torchbearers Youth Association will host its National Youth Convention on February 2nd & 3rd 2017, evening sessions will begin at 7:00pm at the Breezes Resort in the Sea Breeze Ballroom. Under the theme “A Future Worth Voting For”, the convention aims to showcase our vision of a better Bahamas, to highlight young people, to show our commitment to research, technology and innovation, to emphasize our current state of affairs and create viable solutions to improve our state of being.

“The TYA Youth Convention comes as a response to the high level of voter apathy among our young people, who are seemingly disenfranchised and lack hope for a better tomorrow. The Convention has a mandate to re-engage the voting population, notably the large number of our voting population between the ages of 17 and 35. It is incumbent on political youth organizations such as ours to lead the charge and efforts to ensure that our young people not only register to vote, but make their voices heard in exercising their right to vote. We know what steps brought us here, and we have given ourselves the mandate to discover and plan the steps that will enable us to experience a brighter future.

“TYA’s youth convention will feature dynamic speakers who will share with you, the current state of affairs in our country, and are committed to providing solution based ideas. As our FNM places more emphasis on the ratification of young candidates, our convention also seeks to introduce viewers to the future faces of governance the country. These speakers will feature innovative platforms and solutions relevant to young people, to cure some of our country’s chronic ailments. Guests of the convention will hear first-hand from members of the Free National Movement - real plans and steps to help solve three of the most critical subjects on the minds of our young people today: Business, Education, and Crime. Finally, the convention will also focus on the talents of young Bahamian artists, in a showcase of culture and creativity.

“It is our intention as young people, to move our party and country forward, by remaining relevant in the political landscape, with our ears to the ground and providing a platform for other young people to actually be heard. As the youth arm of the FNM, this is our commitment to the young people of our country. More specifically, we have separated our platform into three messages - firstly, highlighting the realities of life for young people in The Bahamas, our experiences and the issues we deal with. Secondly, we will focus on our commitment to modernity, technology and research to improve the ease of life in The Bahamas. We will be hosting a Hackathon to drive innovative and technologically savvy solutions for our current issues. Third, we will continue to build upon the shoulders of our the Dissident Eight, our Founding Fathers, who have placed high value on succession planning, mentorship and involvement of youth in governance-shown by our party’s ratification of youthful, intelligent and solution driven candidates. We are committed to honoring those who went before us, and the legacy they created.

“The Torchbearers Youth Association is privileged to be a part of an organization dedicated to youth empowerment. We wish to congratulate our party on this momentous occasion and thank our leadership team for their confidence and investment in us. We will continue to work toward creating the future we know is worth voting for.”
