NASSAU, The Bahamas – During the official launch of the Ministry of Transport and Local Government’s Road Safety Initiative, 48 students were given their vests branding them as new inductees into the Ministry’s Junior Road Safety program on Monday.

Minister of Transport and Local Government, the Hon. Frankie Campbell told grade 4 & 5 students of Columbus Primary School that road safety is ‘everybody’s business.’  As such, the Minister encouraged the students to remain vigilant whenever they are on the road.

“On country needs all of you and we need you to be the best that you can be,” said Minister Campbell. “Grown ups are busy. We need your help us to remind us to be safe on the streets. Tell mommy that texting while driving is not safe; tell daddy not to speed, tell your friends not to play on the streets because it is dangerous.”

Minister Campbell told the students that it is better to be ‘safe than sorry.’ He said that all safety precautions should be taken while using the roads, driving in vehicles or catching the bus to and from school. He said that some of the messages he wants the children to deliver to friends and family include: ‘don’t text and drive,” Don’t drink and drive,” Don’t Speed’ and the most important: “Buckle up.”

Columbus Primary School is the second school to launch the Junior Road Safety Officer Program. The program will be launched at all primary schools in the country.

The Road Traffic Department embarked on this initiative to partner with primary schools two years ago.
