NASSAU, The Bahamas -- Controller of the Road Traffic Department Ross Smith called a press conference on Monday, May 9, following the release of the Auditor General's Report on the operations of the department in Nassau. Mr. Smith said that the report identified a number of weaknesses in the internal controls of the Department. He said that his office is in the process of reviewing the report and will be meeting with representatives from the Auditor General's Department shortly after, with a view to 'setting the foundation' for a Corrective Action Plan. "Since the recommendations contained in the Auditor General's Report relative to the Abaco Office, several new procedures have now been implemented, which have overtaken some of the recommendations made in the Auditor's Report," said Mr. Smith. He said that on a 'concurrent' basis, his office will be reviewing the findings to determine what implications there are regarding the Road Traffic Department personnel and where those findings are substantiated, immediate action will be taken in accordance with Public Service procedures and the criminal law. In addition, he said that the Road Traffic Department is currently 'aggressively' pursuing the automation process, which he says, is now in its final stages. He said that once implemented, the automation procedures will take the Department 'far' in addressing concerns and will allow for more transparency. It is anticipated that the automation system will commence in October of this year.
