Baha Mar Convention Centre Handed Over for Hosting of Upcoming IDB Meetings

NASSAU, The Bahamas (March 21) -- Minister of State for Finance the Hon. Michael Halkitis said the China Export Import (EXIM) Bank’s approval of the Government's request to use the Baha Mar Convention Centre for the hosting of the 57th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the 31st Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Inter-American Investment Corporation (IIC), April 7-10, 2016 was “very significant.”

He noted, March 18, 2016 during the Handing Over Ceremony at Baha Mar Convention Centre that the approval allows the opportunity for The Bahamas to showcase the "wonderful facility" to senior government officials and prominent public and private sector representatives from 48 countries around the world.

"Further, it demonstrates the country's ability to host major international meetings, conferences and conventions and reinforces the government's commitment to continue to work diligently with the China EXIM Bank to complete and open this vital addition to the country's tourism product and, by extension, the national economy," Minister Halkitis said.

Also taking part in the ceremony were: Project Coordinator for the Bahamas' Local Organizing Committee Janeen McCartney, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to The Bahamas His Excellency Yuan Guisen, and Deloitte and Touche (Bahamas) Managing Partner Raymond Winder.

"Today it becomes official," Minister Halkitis stated. "The Local Organizing Committee has undertaken a considerable amount of work in collaboration with the staff of Baha Mar in preparing the facility to host this major meeting, and will assume control of the Convention Centre on behalf of the Government."

He added that the Government believes that the agreement "paves the way for a successful hosting of the IDB-IIC AGM and for greater things to come in the future."

"On behalf of the Government and People of The Bahamas, I express our sincere gratitude and appreciation for the opportunity to utilize this world-class facility to host such a significant international event," he said.
