Nassau, Bahamas – Officials of the Governments of The Bahamas and the United States of America (USA) met for the first time to discuss matters relating to air space use. Philip Davis, Deputy Prime Minister and Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Glenys Hanna-Martin, Minister of Transport and Aviation represented the Bahamas Government. United States Embassy Charge d’affaires, John L. Armstrong, and Carey Fagan of the Federal Aviation Administration, represented the United States. The meeting was held on March 26 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cable Beach. Minister Hanna-Martin said the objective of the meeting was to seek an agreement regarding the management of The Bahamas air space and a redefinition of air space as it relates to the geographical reality of the archipelago of The Bahamas. “The management arrangement in the first instance we anticipate lead inter alia to a sharing of revenues emanating from over flight fees and the exemption of Bahamas registered aircraft flying in Bahamian air space from the levying of such fees,” she said. The meeting follows 10 years of discussions between The Bahamas and the USA.
