Nassau, Bahamas - The Commonwealth of The Bahamas and the Republic of Korea established diplomatic relations on 8 July 1985.

To commemorate the momentous occasion of the 30th Anniversary of diplomatic relations, His Excellency OH Hangu, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to The Bahamas – resident in the Dominican Republic – and his wife traveled to Nassau to lead commemorative activities on the part of Korea. “Sounds of Korea” by the New York Korean Performing Arts Center (KPAC) performed a special one-night event at the British Colonial Hilton on 16 October 2015.

“Sounds of Korea”, which was sponsored by the Korea Foundation (KF), consists of a dance troupe, an instrument chamber ensemble, and a percussion ensemble. Korean performance art spans a wide range of styles and settings, from classical court music and theatrical masked mask, to popular story-telling songs, drama, popular narrative vocal arts, solo instrumental folk genres, as well as percussion music and dances of farmers.

The Bahamas joined in the festivities with a complementary performance by the National Dance School of The Bahamas.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the two nations have continuously developed a friendly and co-operative relationship. Korea and The Bahamas have been in a close and mutually beneficial co-operation, bilaterally and in various international arenas and a number of high-level official visits have been exchanged.

Bilaterally, The Bahamas has taken advantage of technical assistance offered by the Korean International Co-operation Agency (KOICA) for national development in a wide range of areas, including through training courses, scholarships and grants of technology equipment. Korea has benefitted from strong Bahamian support in its efforts in international organisations.

On the regional front, the Korean government has held the Caribbean-Korean High-Level Forum annually, addressing matters of common interest between the two partners, which have over the times included matters such as e-government, marine environmental management, new and renewable energy, and tourism. This October, the Honourable Kenred Dorsett, Minister of the Environment and Housing, is scheduled to travel to Korea to attend the 5th High-Level Forum.

Ambassador Oh presented his credentials to Her Excellency Dame Marguerite Pindling, GCMG, Governor-General of The Bahamas, and on that occasion, Ambassador Oh said that the Korean government cherished its relationship with The Bahamas, and he expressed his most sincere gratitude and appreciation for all the support that The Bahamas had demonstrated in their common international efforts. It is in the spirit of the Korean government’s fulfilment of its international exchange and public diplomacy – a main priority of that government – that this event has been organised jointly with The Bahamas.
