Today, the 9th of September 2015, at or around 17:30 local time in Great Britain and at or around 12:30 pm in The Bahamas, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will have surpassed the reign of her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, and become the longest-reigning British monarch.

To commemorate this historic milestone in the life of the Commonwealth, the Bahamas Postal Service will issue Britain’s Longest Reigning Monarch commemorative postage stamps.

BRIEF BACKGROUND

Queen Elizabeth II assumed her ceremonial duties as the Queen of England on 6th February 1952 at the age of 25 and her official coronation was held on 2nd June 1953. Her reign continues to this day and is the longest of the forty-one kings and queens of England since the Norman Conquest. She is married to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and they have four children: Charles, Prince of Wales; Anne, Princess Royal; Andrew, Duke of York; and Edward, Earl of Wessex.

Her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria whose reign she eclipses, came to the English throne in 1838 at the tender age of 18 and died in 1901 at the age of 81, having served for 63 years and 216 days. Reigning during an entirely different era, she is historically known for winning three crucial wars: the Opium, the Crimean and the South African Wars. Her statue sits prominently in Nassau’s Parliament Square.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF COMMEMORATIVE POSTAGE STAMPS

On the 15c postage stamp, Her Majesty is shown against the coronation stamp and First Day Cover from 1953. The photo of her was taken on 3rd November 1953 when she left Buckingham Palace in the Irish State Coach for Westminster for the official opening of Parliament. (Photo by Popperfoto/Getty Images)

On the 50c postage stamp, The Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) is prominently featured with a photo of the facility during the Queen’s 1966 Official State Visit. The PMH is a non-profit publicly-funded health facility constructed in 1952, and was previously named the Bahamas General Hospital. The hospital was renamed the Princess Margaret Hospital in honour of the visit to the Bahamas of the Queen of England’s sister, Princess Margaret, in the year 1955. The photo of the queen on the stamp was taken when she attended the premiere performance of the film, ‘Born Free.’ (Photo by Keystone/Getty Images)

On the 65c postage stamp, Her Majesty is shown having a chat with Sir Milo B. Butler, the first Bahamian Governor General of an independent Bahamas, during her 1975 Official State Visit. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have visited the islands during Caribbean tours of February 1966, February 1975, and the Silver Jubilee tour of October 1977. There was a further Nassau visit for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in October 1985. (Photo by Serge Lemoine/Getty Images)

On the 70c postage stamp, the Queen’s grandson, Prince Harry, talks to local Scouts after attending a service of Morning Prayer at Christ Church Cathedral on March 4, 2012 in Nassau, Bahamas. The prince was visiting The Bahamas as part of a Diamond Jubilee tour as a representative of Queen Elizabeth II. The portrait of the Queen on the postal stamp, taken on June 5, 2012, captured her as she spoke with guests at a reception hosted by the Lord Mayor of London and the City in honour of her Diamond Jubilee.
