NASSAU, Bahamas -- Marion Bethel, The Bahamas' candidate for the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) was successfully elected to serve for four years on the Committee. The Committee had 11 vacant seats and 25 persons contesting. Ms. Bethel was endorsed by the Caribbean Community and also received widespread support from many Asian, African and European countries. Her credentials and experience made her an excellent choice for The Bahamas. CEDAW is an international treaty adopted in 1979 by the United Nations General Assembly. Described as an international bill of rights for women, it was instituted on September 3, 1981 and has been ratified by 189 states. Pictured sitting from left to right are Minister Melanie S.
