COVID-19 Task Force Coordinator and Special Adviser: No New Cases of COVID-19 to Report

NASSAU, The Bahamas - Dr. Merceline Dahl-Regis, COVID-19 Task Force Coordinator and Special Adviser to the Prime Minister stated that she was very pleased to report that there are no new COVID-19 cases have been reported.
“It has been 18 days since a new case of COVID-19 has been recorded in The Bahamas,” Dr. Dahl-Regis said during the COVID-19 Update Press Conference held at the Ministry of Health, Thursday, July 2, 2020.
She explained that the total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 remains at 104.
“The number of recovered cases is at 89. We are down to four active cases. Deaths remain at 11. There are no hospitalized cases.”
Dr. Dahl-Regis stated that a total of 2,428 tests have been completed and they have increased testing.
“It is important to note that despite the increase in the number of tests after the last confirmed case on the 14th of June, we have not documented any new cases.
“We are pleased that our COVID-19 case recovery rate, to date, is at 86 per cent. We will continue to monitor those cases until all have recovered.”
She said what the data has shown is that the recovery period from COVID-19 is varied. In one case, it took as long as 72 days before the case was fully recovered and the data also show that the period of recovery is not age dependent.
The COVID-19 Task Force Coordinator and Special Adviser to the Prime Minister stated that she regretted that to date there have been 11 confirmed COVID-19 related deaths.
“All of the COVID-19 related deaths occurred with patients having one or more comorbidities.
“We have been successful in containing the COVID-19 virus in The Bahamas, to date.”
She also congratulated the public for following the public health guidelines and adhering to the Emergency Orders, lockdowns and curfews. “We could not contain the virus without the cooperation and support of the public.”
However, Dr. Dahl-Regis stressed that the country is not out of the woods yet. “The pandemic is not over. There is no vaccine for COVID-19 and everyone must remain vigilant.
“We must maintain the containment of COVID-19 and minimize the risk of importation of the virus as we re-open our international borders, our economy, and begin to return to some sense of normalcy.”
She said to do so, it is imperative that:
1. All residents must continue to follow health guidelines. That means -- wear your mask. Wash your hands thoroughly and often. Practice physical distancing of at least 6 feet, and please stay at home if you are not feeling well.
2. The Ministry of Health must continue to identify COVID-19 cases early and carry out contact tracing.
3. The Ministry of Health must continue to isolate and quarantine COVID-19 cases and the contacts of those cases.
