Nassau, The Bahamas – Families throughout the Commonwealth of The Bahamas have a significant role to play in protecting the country from the destructive effects of Climate Change.

Addressing Members of the House of Assembly on Wednesday, May 15 (a day that is annually observed as International Day of Families), Minister of Social Services and Urban Development, the Hon. Frankie A. Campbell, said increases in global temperatures, rising sea levels, ocean pollution and other climate change impacts, are seriously affecting low-lying coastal communities and countries such as The Bahamas.

The impacts of climate change have become so great and so devastating in recent years that the United Nations selected “Families and Climate Action: Focus on SDG 13” as the theme for the 2019 observance of International Day of Families.

Minister Campbell’s appeal comes as Disaster Management and Preparedness officials locally, regionally and internationally, are preparing for the start of the 2019 Atlantic Hurricane Season that begins June 1.

“This year, the United Nations focuses on families, government policies and major climate change action targets that may be used to improve and protect our families and our planet,” Minister Campbell said.

“In the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 170 countries expressed their commitment to protecting the planet from destruction and taking urgent action on climate change.

“The lives of thousands of families, and biological support systems on the planet are at risk,” Minister Campbell said. “SDG#13 is asking for families all over the world to be a part of the solution.

“Today, we join our voices to the hundreds of discussions and speeches occurring around the planet which will highlight how families may become involved,” Minister Campbell told House Members.

“The main goal of this day (International Day of Families) is to focus on SDG Goal #13 -- which is to combat climate change and protect our planet,” Minister Campbell added.
