Chinese Ambassador pays courtesy call on Minister for Grand Bahama

Freeport, BAHAMAS – Minister for Grand Bahama, the Honourable Dr. Michael Darville welcomed His Excellency Huang Qinguo, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of The People's Republic of China, Madam Zheng Chuncao and their delegation to Grand Bahama Thursday on what was their first official visit.

His Excellency and his wife paid a courtesy call on the Minister at the Ministry for Grand Bahama not long after arriving on island.

Cognizant of the long-standing mutually beneficial relationship the government of The Bahamas and The People’s Republic of China share, Minister Darville said that bond has resulted in the economic growth and strong bi-lateral ties for both countries over the past two decades.

“The relationship between The Bahamas and China extend back to 1990 when Hutchison Whampoa made the initial investment in Freeport and developed the Freeport Container Port,” the Minister said.

The government of China continues to offer full scholarships to Bahamians who wish to pursue undergraduate and graduate studies in a wide variety of academic disciplines.

“Furthermore, Excellency, the Bright Journey Programme which provides free cataract surgeries as well as equipment, instruments and medical supplies over the last two years, helps to restore the sight of 150 Grand Bahamians. This major social initiative was a gift from The People’s Republic of China and, as a result distinguished specialists from Peking University many residents in the Northern Bahamas are living normal lives as a result of their restored vision,” Dr. Darville said.

The Minister noted that Grand Bahama Island has limitless potential and that it is his hope that both countries will continue to work together to advance cultural exchange, trade and investment for years to come.

His Excellency expressed that his intent during the visit was to garner more information about Grand Bahama, make new friends and seek more opportunities for exchange and communication.

“I believe that through this visit we can deepen our mutual understanding and cooperation between our two countries,” His Excellency said.

His Excellency and his delegation also paid a courtesy call on the president and executives of the Grand Bahama Port Authority and the president and executives of the Grand Bahama Chamber of Commerce before touring the Freeport Container Port.
