Nassau, The Bahamas – Chinese Ambassador to The Bahamas, His Excellency Huang Qinguo, paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Health, Hon. Renward Wells at the Ministry of Health on Friday, 31st July. Minister Wells thanked the Ambassador and asked him to convey the gratitude of the Bahamian people to the Chinese government and people. He said that The Bahamas and China have enjoyed diplomatic relations for 23 years. “Our bilateral relations have proven beneficial for both countries ever since we established diplomatic relations over 23 years ago,” said Minister Wells. “Nobody would have envisaged the toll that this virus would have taken on our country and, indeed, the world over the past eight months. The Bahamas has observed the gallant efforts taken by China to minimize the effects of the virus and also its continued commitment to assist other countries.” Ambassador Huang said that the efforts taken and success seen in the earlier stages of managing the virus in The Bahamas were very notable. He said that the donation of medical supplies presented that morning from the Chinese Embassy was the first round to support the fight against Covid-19.
“We noticed that the Bahamas has taken proactive measures to minimize the spread of the virus,” he said. “We are aware that once borders were [opened], that increases were seen in the number of patients, however, we see that there is continued effort to reduce the incidences of the virus.” Minister Wells said that the government will be implementing more measures to ‘bend the curve’ of the virus as plans of a phased opening of the economy continue. The donated items included swabs and other personal protective equipment.
