EIGHT MILE ROCK, Grand Bahama – The Second Annual West Grand Bahama ‘Tree Lighting and Gospel Concert’ proved to be a big hit this past Sunday as hundreds turned out at the Martin Town Primary School for the event. Exciting the crowd was performances by the Fabulous Cooling Waters, Simeon Outten, and school choirs from West End School, Martin Town, Holmes Rock, Bartlett Hill and the Lewis Yard Primary School to name a few. The high point of the evening was the Tree Lighting ceremony and the appearance by Santa who gave out hundred of gifts to the many children assembled. Children from Lewis Yard, Pinders Point, Hunters, West End, Holmes Rock, Sea Grape and the Eight Mile Rock communities attended the event. On hand to bring brief remarks was the Hon. Michael Halkitis, Minister of State for Finance and Acting Minister for Grand Bahama, who thanked the young choirs for their excellent performances noting that one could tell that a lot of effort went into them.
He told the gathering that “as we move into the holiday season, one of the most important times in the Christian calendar, it gives us an opportunity to pause and to reflect; and as we move into the new year, to make resolutions.” He reminded the audience that the theme of the program is ‘Spread the Love’ and that it gives us time to reflect on the true meaning of this Christmas Season, “that is God sending His Son to be amongst us, to dwell with us and eventually to give His life for us so that we might be saved. “I think it gives us the wonderful opportunity to reflect on the true meaning of the season and as we move out of the holiday season and into the new year to make that resolution to share the love and to reflect in our lives every day the meaning of the season: peace on earth, goodwill towards men,” he said.
