The Democratic National Alliance is saddened by the reports of school violence which erupted today on the campus of Government High School. The incident according to media reports, critically wounded one student and injured two others. As a father and a citizen this latest incident is an all too painful reminder that none of us, not even our children – are safe!

The GHS incident is also a sobering indication of how much work must be done in terms of socializing our young people. This growing scourge of school violence is proof positive that our schools have in fact, become a microcosm of our communities with young men in particular, mimicking the violence which they are otherwise exposed to. This incident is not just a travesty for the victims and their families but also for the students who allegedly perpetrated this act of violence as well. As the school and the wider community move toward healing, our prayers are with the families of those youngsters and for all students, teachers and staff at that institution.

Even as we pray however, we must not bury our heads in the sand. Addressing this issue will take more than just talk, but real action on the part of ALL OF US. Parents, teachers, school administrators, civil and community leaders and the church must first take responsibility for our collective failures in RAISING and TRAINING our young people and second take the necessary steps to reverse this trend of violence through proper conflict resolution, and counseling for troubled or struggling teenagers.
