Department of Labour starts the year with Community Recruitment and Online Portal Upgrade

Nassau, Bahamas – The Bahamas Department of Labour continues to fulfill its mission of fostering good industrial relations between employers and employees , while promoting high levels of employment . With levels of unemployment being a matter of national concern, the Department continues to actively respond to the needs of job seekers and employers alike by facilitating initiatives where the j ob seeker can be successfully matched with available job opportunities .

On Monday, 8 th January, 2018 at 9:00am, Minister of Labour, Sen. Hon Dion A. Foulkes will launch a host of initiatives to aid i n achieving this goal.

A n Employer’s Job Fair will be held at the Department of Labour’s Rosetta Street Office, City Corporate Center Building, between the hours of 10:00am. – 2:00pm on 8th January.

The Job Fair is designed to showcase the recently updated web based PCRecruiter Software System to employers and thereby strengthen the Department ’ s National Skills Bank. Additionally, the goal of the job fair is to provide employers with access to resumes of eligible Bahamian job seekers in the country and a broad , and to provid e opportunities for employers to upload job vacancies to the online portal.

Patrenda Brice, Deputy Director of Labour, noted that the Department wants to meet with, engage and network with employers and allow these employers to meet the officers of the Public Employment Services (P. E. S.) Unit of the Department of Labour to be ma de aware of the support role the P.E.S. Unit can provid e to them . For example, the Department of Labour, at its various sub - offices located on Robinson Road and Carmichael Road, or its Head Office on Rosetta Street, can provide employers with a space to conduct job interviews off premises .

During the Employer’s J ob F air, the Minister will also officially launch an exciting recruitment initiative called “ Labour on t he Blocks ”. This recruitment drive will commence on 13 th January, 2018 with a registration drive on the Sarah Ingraham Park , Hospital Lane and Cambridge street, in the Bain and Grants Town comm unity . Registration is expected to be held between 11 :00 am to 3 :00 pm .

Minister Foulkes describes the “Labour on the Blocks” initiative as an opportunity for the Department of Labour Public Employment Services (P.E.S.) Unit teams to go out and meet individuals in their space. Job seekers who may have given up on finding gainf ul employment or not understand the avenues they should take to secure employment. Labour personnel will go into various communities, be- ginning with Bain and Grants Town, to speak with them and register them on the PCRecruiter database in an effort to match these job seekers with potential job opportunities . Businesses in these areas may also join the Department in this exciting initiative by coming out and registering their job vacancies on - site.

On 20 th January , 2018, a Construction Job Fair , specifically focused on job seekers and employers in the construction industry is scheduled for the Kendal G. L. Isaacs Gymnasium from 12noon to 4 :00 pm

These Labour initiatives for the month of January 2018 are a great jump start to actively engaging and connecting eligible job seekers with the appropriate job opportunities making for an easier process for job seekers and employers alike. The Department of Labour’s facilitation of these type initiatives will continue into the year as the goal of decreasing levels of unemployment will be successfully achieved through these strategic programmes . No longer will the traditional methods of job seeking and employee engagement be the only source of job placement.

Department of Labour P. E. S. Unit Officers will be registering individuals on - site at the various events. Job seekers who are disabled are also encouraged to attend, preferably ac companied by a family member or associate who is able to assist with their registration process.
