Nassau, The Bahamas – With the assistance of the United States Embassy, a digital recording system will be reintroduced to the Courts, Chief Justice Brian Moree, QC, announced recently.

The Chief Justice said following a review, the decision was made to follow the “judicial trend” and commit to re-launching the system. “This is another part of the Courts’ new technology platform and we expect to start with a pilot programme during the first quarter, subject to sourcing the additional staff requirements and completing the necessary training,” said Mr. Moree.

When completed, digital recording systems will be installed in all courts in New Providence and Freeport.

Transcription will be carried out as a back office service by voice writers after cross training.

The installation of the digital recording systems is expected to “greatly” increase the productivity in the Magistrate’s Court as currently there are no court reporters in those courts, resulting in handwritten record of the proceedings by Magistrates and delays in the disposition of cases.

Furthermore, it is expected that the new system will improve productivity in the Supreme Court and expedite the appeal process.
