Dorsett acknowledges Tribune retraction re: Bahamas Mortgage Corporation
May 23, 2016 - 1:30:22 PM

Abu Dhabi, UAE - Statement from Minister Dorsett acknowledging the retraction printed in the Tribune this morning concerning the audited financials of the Bahamas Mortgage Corporation:

I am pleased to note that the Tribune has printed a correction in their 23rd May edition admitting that their reports about the audits prepared and tabled by the Christie administration in relation to the Bahamas Mortgage Corporation were factually incorrect.

The Tribune attributed work to the FNM, which was carried out by the current government and slammed the PLP for neglect in relation to BMC's audits, when the evidence clearly shows that not only has this government advanced its work, it also completed what the FNM left undone!

I also publicly accept the written apology provided by the reporter, Mr. Rashad Rolle.

In a democracy it is important for the media to make governments accountable. However, it is equally important for a government to ensure that where its record is not accurately reported or stated that the inaccuracy be challenged and corrected.

Since coming to office in 2012, this Christie-led government has completed the BMC audits for 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. The audits for 2009-2012 have been tabled in the House of Assembly. The audited report for 2013 will be tabled shortly and 2014 and 2015 are in progress.
