E Clement Bethel National Arts Festival 2010 dates and adjucators announced

NASSAU, The Bahamas -- The Department of Culture in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture released the scheduled dates for the E Clement Bethel National Arts Festival adjudications.  

In New Providence, the Music Adjudications are slated for March 15-17 and April 19-21, 2010.  Drama and Dance Adjudications are slated for March 22-26, 2010, and the closing date for all dance, drama and music entries is slated for February 28, 2010.  Arts and Crafts Adjudications is slated for June 2, 2010, with the closing date on April 9, 2010.  

In Grand Bahama, Dance Adjudications are slated for April 27-30, 2010, Drama and Music Adjudications are slated for April 23-30, 2010, and the Arts and Crafts Adjudications is slated for June 2, 2010.  

Late entries will be received for all New Providence and Grand Bahama entrants no later than March 5, 2010, the Department said.   

The Department also stressed that no one who is not on the schedule on the date of adjudications will be accepted for adjudications on the said day.  

Adjudication dates for all Family Islands are slated for March 1-May 27, 2010.  

Adjudications for Eleuthera, Harbour Island and Current Islands are March 1-4, 2010, Moore’s Island, Abaco is March 5, 2010, and Abaco is March 8-11, 2010.  Ragged Island will have adjudications on March 12, Mangrove Cay, Andros, on April 14, South Andros (Congo Town) on April 15, and Bimini on April 16, 2010.  

Adjudications for Cat Island is slated for May 3, Mayaguana is May 4, Inagua is May 5, and Rum Cay is May 6, 2010.  

Adjudications for Long Island is slated for May 10-11, Crooked Island is May 12, Long Cay is May 13, Acklins is May 14, San Salvador is May 17, mainland Exuma is May 18-19, Berry Islands is May 20-21, Farmers Cay is May 24, Black Point is May 25 and North and Central Andros is May 26-27, 2010.  

The closing date for Family Islands, except for Eleuthera and Abaco, is slated for March 11, 2010.  Eleuthera and Abaco, the Department stated have closing dates slated for the same dates as New Providence and Grand Bahama.  

All dates are subject to change.

Adjudicators Named for E Clement Bethel National Arts Festival 

NASSAU, The Bahamas -- The Department of Culture in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture recently identified the adjudicators for the 2010 E Clement Bethel National Arts Festival, which is slated to begin on March 1, 2010. 

Choral and Instrumental Music Adjudicator is Mrs Audrey Dean-Wright.  She is a composer, singer, choral conductor, lecturer and poet. 

Mrs Dean-Wright was born in Nassau, Bahamas, and her educational background is extensive.  It includes being educated at the following institutions: Bahamas Academy of Seventh-Day Adventists and the Jamaica School of Music, Kingston, Jamaica.   

She was the recipient of the Bahamas Government Scholarship to Manhattan School of Music, Manhattan, New York, (B. A. Music Degree -- Voice) and the recipient of The College of The Bahamas In-Service Award to Manhattan School of Music, New York (Masters of Music Degree in Music Education and Clarinet).    

Mrs Dean-Wright had early piano studies with Muriel Mallory, in-depth study of music and piano skills with mentor, Mr Bethel and also studied piano with Meta Davis-Cumberbatch.  

Dance Adjudicator is Lawrence Carroll and he began his dance training with the New Breed Dancers in Nassau.  Later, he travelled to Toronto, Canada, to advance his studies at Ryerson University, where he studied Theatre Arts and graduated with Honours.   

At the Canadian College of Dance, he also studied classical ballet with the Royal Academy of Dance and modern dance and national dance with the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing.   

After graduating from Ryerson University, he began teaching at the National Dance School and later went to A F Adderley, C C Sweeting and D W Davis schools, among others. 

Drama Adjudicator is Mr James Catalyn.  He studied drama at De’ Paul University in Chicago, Illinois.  Mr Catalyn has brought Bahamian culture to the forefront by his prolific writing; his works have been performed on stage, radio and throughout the islands of The Bahamas.   

He and his troupe represented The Bahamas internationally in New Zealand, Trinidad, Bermuda and at the United Nations in New York City.   

His insistence that Bahamians speak  “Bahamianese” have made many more aware of the beauty and uniqueness of Bahamian dialect, and, in his writings and performances, he accentuates the beauty of our language, while encouraging us to be proud of this aspect of our culture.  

Arts and Crafts Adjudicator, Heino Schmid is a Bahamian, born to a Bahamian mother and a German father.  He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography at the Savannah College of Art Design and his Masters in Fine Arts from the Utrecht Graduate School of Visual Art & Design in Utrecht, The Netherlands.   

He has participated in numerous group shows in The Bahamas, the United States, the United Kingdom and Europe.  Among them were Work! in 2007 at the Popopistudios Gallery, Nassau; Funky Nassau: Recovering An Identity, in 2006
