Nassau, The Bahamas - Administrators and teachers on the islands of Eleuthera and Exuma got down to business as they energetically prepared classrooms for the return of students after the long summer vacation. Teachers decorated bulletin boards, arranged desks and chairs, and placed book bags on cabinets, while principals and other administrators oversaw timetables, and coordinated school repairs with contractors.

Education Minister, Jerome Fitzgerald met with District Superintendents, Helen Simmons-Johnson in Eleuthera, and Pamela Gorte in Exuma to inspect the repairs done in schools thus far. While in Eleuthera, the Minister met with the Parent Teachers’ Association (PTA) to reveal and discuss the working drawings for the new school that is to be built next year. The two story complex which will cost approximately twelve million dollars will boast administrators’ offices, three classroom blocks, a tuck shop, and a pavilion amongst other features. The PTA, after asking several questions of the Minister left very pleased and pledged to work closely with the principal and other members of the community to look for alternate housing for the students while the building is being constructed. In Exuma, Minister Fitzgerald expressed his gratitude to General Manager of Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort, Mr. Jeremy Mutton for being such an excellent corporate partner for schools on the island. In Exuma, as on the other islands, the Minister committed to placing the programme, “Tune in to Reading” in each computer lab to assist teachers with the Ministry’s goal of increasing the literacy levels of students throughout the country.

Covering seventeen schools in Eleuthera, and in Exuma, approximately nine schools, the Minister thanked administrators and teachers for the exceptional work being done with students, and vowed his continued support, so that the improved results in this year’s national exams may be sustained.
