Nassau, Bahamas - In
keeping with the Government’s commitment to inform the public as appropriate
regarding the cases of the nine Bahamian citizens arrested in New York
on 18 September 2010, and charged with conspiracy in the trafficking
of counterfeit goods and services in violation of title 18 section 2320
United States code, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to advise
the public as follows:
In
its Press Release of the 22 September 2010 the Ministry informed the
public of the situation regarding the Bahamian nationals at that time.
The Consul General, Carl Smith, and Vice Consul, Sandra Poitier McLaughlin
visited all the Bahamian nationals on 22 and 24 September and 1 October 2010, and reports that they are all
well.
The
case of Tracey Davis was heard on 5 October 2010 at which time she pled
guilty. She was bailed and released on her own recognizance and
ordered to return to court on 14 October 2010 for sentencing.
She remained in New York.
At
today’s proceedings Ms Davis was sentenced to time served and placed
on two (2) years probation. She is expected to return home tomorrow.
The
Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to pay special tribute to all persons
involved in this case whose outcome respects the rule of law and the
exercise of compassion. The Ministry is pleased that
Ms Davis will soon be home with her family.
The
Consul General and his staff will continue to monitor the cases of the
other Bahamian nationals.
