Fred Mitchell reflects on Black Tuesday 49 years later

Nassau, The Bahamas - Today as the Member of Parliament for the free and sovereign Bahamians who happen to reside in the Fox Hill constituency (in New Providence), I wish to mark the occasion of 27th April 2014, known in the history books of The Bahamas as Black Tuesday.
On this day 49 years ago, the brave men and women of the Progressive Liberal Party's council and their Members of Parliament led a public demonstration to protest the boundaries that were being proposed by the then United Bahamian Party Government. The protest culminated in the act of civil disobedience by the late Sir Lynden Pindling when he threw the Speaker's mace out of the window of the House, saying "this is the symbol of the authority of the people, and the people are outside." That act was a defining moment in the country's march toward majority rule which came on 10th January 1967.
