FREEPORT, Grand Bahama – Sixteen more businesses were on Thursday the recipients of grants from the Office of the Prime Minister in conjunction with the Small Business Development Centre.

During a brief ceremony at OPM, Minister of State for Grand Bahama, Senator the Hon. J. Kwasi Thompson, said grants were being given for small businesses that were damaged by the hurricane and a second grant, geared towards upgrading technology in software and equipment.

The Small Business Development Centre was created by government, he said, to assist small businesses in the community.

Minister Thompson noted that hundreds of young people have been trained in the area of technology through programmes at BTVI; and the YMCA and Urban Renewal Centres will be outfitted with computers for the same purpose.

Yvette Oconno, Director of the Small Business Development Centre, said she is pleased that they can assist small and medium-sized businesses on the island and she’s looking forward to the economic development in Grand Bahama.

“I’m looking to see, not just the city of Freeport, but the island of Grand Bahama go to higher heights,” she said. And continued, “This will be a new city. I have seen a melting pot that is about to take place and people will come from everywhere to help build the island of Grand Bahama.”

She said great things are about to happen in Freeport, and more importantly on the entire island.
