CROOKED ISLAND, The Bahamas – Executive Chairman of Water & Sewerage Corporation (WSC) Adrian Gibson assured residents of Crooked Island that the government is “keenly” aware of the water needs in the Family Islands, and is currently formulating plans to address these needs and committed to safe and reliable water supply.
Mr. Gibson, MP for Long Island, gave remarks at a groundbreaking ceremony for potable water distribution systems at Colonel Hill Park on November 25, 2019.
Earlier that day he led a delegation of officials and WSC representatives to the remote island. Among them was the Hon. Miriam Emmanuel, MP for MICAL; Elwood Donaldson, WSC GM; Cyprian Gibson, AGM, Family Island Division; and Bennett Minnis, WSC board member.
Mr. Gibson told the small gathering that WSC has completed works in New Providence and San Salvador and works are set to begin in Crooked Island.

“In short course we will also announce the tendering process for Cat Island. Help and hope are on the way. Water is soon to come your way,” said Mr. Gibson.
The Bahamas Government has received funding from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) for a $28.33 million Water Supply Improvement project with counter-part funding of $13.3 million by the Bahamas Government.
In Crooked Island, the settlements of Pond Road, Church Grove, Timothy Thompson and Colonel Hill will get potable water for the first time.
Approximately 18,850 feet of 4-inch PVC pipe and approximately 5,800 feet 2-inch PVC pipe with 83 water service connections will be installed there.
Mr. Gibson revealed that engineers and other technical staff have conducted assessments in the settlements of Landrail Point and Cripple Hill.
“We are actively looking at these areas and plans are in place to see how we can address those settlements on that side of the island,” said Mr. Gibson.
He disclosed that Crooked Island will also be the recipient of at least one, possibly two new Reverse Osmosis plants.
“The Corporation is looking to secure these in short course. Crooked Island has priority on WSC ‘s list,” he said.
Mrs. Emmanuel said it was a day of celebration. She said the government recognizes that water is an essential element.
“It’s been a long time coming, but Crooked Island your change is here. We will continue to make life better for all,” she added.
Edith Bain, a Local Government representative, described the groundbreaking as a “quantum” leap for the residents of Crooked Island.
“My grandparents and parents had to go and bring water from far distances for daily use such as cooking, cleaning and drinking.
“We are particularly grateful that you saw fit to come to us at Thanksgiving season.
“We have waited a long time for this precious gift,” said Ms. Bain.
