Governor General Presents Queen’s New Year Honours 2019

Nassau, The Bahamas - The Commonwealth of The Bahamas Investiture and the Queen’s New Year Honours 2019 Presentation of Insignia and Warrants of Appointment by the Governor General His Excellency the Most Hon. Cornelius A. Smith took place at Government House, Thursday, August 1, 2019.

There were eight recipients of the Queen’s New Year Honours 2019.

The Hon. Janet Bostwick received her appointment as Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire at an Investiture at Buckingham Palace, London, March 28, 2019.

Seven other recipients of the Queen’s Honours 2019, received their appointments during the ceremony at Government House, where Prime Minister the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis was also in attendance along with family, friends and colleagues of the Honourees.

Secretary to the Cabinet and a career civil servant of more than 44 years, Camille Johnson, received the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (CMG) for her outstanding services to education and the public service.

Rev. Monsignor Alfred Cedric Culmer received the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to religion.  He was ordained to the priesthood in the Catholic faith on November 30, 1976 and for over 42 years has served with distinction in many pastoral ministries.  Monsignor Culmer has also made significant contributions to education.

The fifth Commissioner of Police in an Independent Bahamas serving from 2008 to 2010, Reginald Ferguson received the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire appointment for his services in the Civil Service. 

He has more than 44 years of service on the Royal Bahamas Police Force and worked in a cross-section of areas, developing intelligence and crime fighting programmes.  In recognition of his devoted service in law enforcement, Mr. Ferguson received many commendations and awards, including the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Queen’s Police Medal.

Chief Apostle Leon Wallace received Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for his services to religion and to the community.  He has spent his 51 years in the Christian Ministry traveling throughout The Bahamas, Caribbean and the world spreading the word of Jesus Christ.

Jason Harrison Hanna received the British Empire Medal (Civil Division) for his services to business and the community.  Mr. Hanna who has his own plumbing business, is known as a community builder and activist for equal rights and opportunity for all.

Nicole Martin received the British Empire Medal (Civil Division) for her services to industry.  Ms. Martin is the first female to lead the Bahamas Hotel, Catering and Allied Workers Union, the largest trade union in The Bahamas with an estimated membership of 6,000.  She served as president for almost a decade, from 2009 to 2018. 

Alfred Kenneth Russell received the British Empire Medal (Civil Division) for his services to politics and for business.  His public service began in McLean’s Town Grand Bahama, his adoptive home, and has spanned more than four decades.  Mr. Russell was not able to attend the event, so Tex Turnquest received his honour on his behalf.
