FREEPORT, Grand Bahama - Graduation is not the end, but the beginning of making a positive contribution to your community, Prime Minister of The Bahamas, the Rt. Hon. Perry Christie told the 2015 graduates of Terreve College during their commencement ceremonies at The Grand Lucayan Ballroom on Saturday.

Amidst the buzz of excitement, the 26 graduates received their General Equivalency Diploma (GED). It was also the first time that Urban Renewal sponsored 14 young people to attain this diploma. They were among the over 70 graduates at the ceremony.

The Prime Minister encouraged the graduates to note “that the attainment of this diploma is not an end in itself. It is a beginning. It is a means by which you can now make a new start and do something positive in your life and be a contributing part of our community. It is the first step, as it were, in that upward spiral that can take you to the top and bring the reward of a good life of quality and self-actualization."

All of the graduates were congratulated for their various achievements by Prime Minister Perry Christie, who told them the very intent of education is to create in them a thirst to want to achieve and to learn more. He said education is intended to be a motivator, that motivates one to do better and point you in the direction of self- improvement. It is also an enabler, he continued, that opens doors but he also cautioned them not to make the mistake in believing that it will give them automatic access to a new world.

"Rather we must use our precious education to pursue stronger goals. As you well know, nothing in life is automatic. It calls for hard work and careful choices.” He appealed to them to set realistic goals because realistic goals calls for critical self-examination.

Prime Minister Christie extended special congratulations to the Administration of Terreve College and encouraged them to continue to inspire their students to dig deep, teach them to respect others, expose them to character building, and give them that sense that they can be anything but it all comes through hard work.

"Let Terreve College be a place where our children can go to find intervention for their challenges in learning."
