Grand Bahama Sewage Leak in Chesapeake Subdivision Being Investigated

An investigation into the sewage leakage in the Chesapeake Subdivision has been launched and as soon as all information is gathered, a report will be made said Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville during a press conference at the Ministry on Monday. FREEPORT, Grand Bahama -- An investigation has been launched into the reported leak of sewage in the Chesapeake Subdivision, announced the Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville during a press conference at the Ministry for Grand Bahama on Monday.
"I read with great interest and concern, the assertions made by Chesapeake Subdivision spokesman, Mr. Shuffel Hepburn, regarding the seepage of raw waste around the sewerage plant in that area, in The FREEPORT NEWS on Wednesday, January 21, 2015.
"In response to this statement on Friday, January 23, 2015 at 3pm I, along with representatives from the Ministry for Grand Bahama, the Department of Environmental Health Services, the Grand Bahama Port Authority and the East Grand Bahama local government representative conducted a tour of the Chesapeake sewage waste water plant, where we were able to view firsthand the complete operation of the automated services at this facility, which is responsible for processing sewage and waste water for the Port Lucaya area and the Lucaya subdivision. During our visit, the complaints raised by Mr. Hepburn were discussed at length and before our meeting concluded, Mrs. Bertha McPhee-Duncanson, Chief Inspector of The Department of Environmental Health Services, requested vital information about the plant from the Utility Department of the Grand Bahama Port Authority."
Flanked by Deputy Chief Councillor and representative for East Grand Bahama, Nevar Smith and Mrs. McPhee-Duncanson, the Minister further stated the information is currently being collected and a report will determine whether any health risks are associated with the plant.
"As the health and wellness of all residents of Grand Bahama is a priority of this administration, I would like to take this opportunity assure the residents of the Chesapeake Subdivision and surrounding areas, that their concerns have not fallen on 'deaf ears' and also, note that I am working diligently along with the Department of Environmental Health Services to bring resolution and closure to this matter."
Mr. Smith added that his presence at the press conference was not on behalf of the City of Freeport Council, but as the local representative of the area and concern for his constituents.
