Nassau, Bahamas - The Bahamas Permanent Representative to the United Nations, H.E. Sheila Gweneth Carey, completed her tour of duty at the United Nations (UN) and returned to The Bahamas on 6 November 2020.

Ambassador Carey’s distinguished career includes postings as the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Bahamas High Commission in Ottawa, Canada, and The Bahamas Embassy in the People’s Republic of China, for over seven years ending her tour in 2015. She was assigned for a time as Chargé d’Affaires, a.i., at the Embassy in Washington, DC, had several assignments to the Consulates in Miami and New York, as well as several assignments to the Permanent Mission to the UN. This final assignment to the Permanent Mission to the United Nations as the Permanent Representative, in September 2017, was a crowning achievement in a long successful career. During Ambassador Carey’s tenure at the United Nations, she was appointed by the UN President of the General Assembly in October 2018, with Sweden, as co-facilitator of the negotiations on the Outcome Document of the Summit on Sustainable Development Goals held in September 2019. She was instrumental in the successful re-election of The Bahamas to the ‘Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women’ for 2021-2024, and the historic election to the United Nations Human Rights Council for 2019-2021, a first for The Bahamas.

 The Bahamas was fortunate to have had such an experienced, capable Envoy representing not only the interests of The Bahamas at the United Nations but also as the Ambassador to the several countries to which she was concurrently accredited whilst serving in the UN.
