ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada – The goals and objectives of the Foreign Affairs policies of The Bahamas under the Hubert Alexander Minnis Administration will be to enable policies that keep Bahamians safe and prosperous for generations to come, Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Darren Henfield said Thursday at the 38th Regular Meeting of the Conference of CARICOM Heads of Government. “Foreign Affairs to me has to have an objective and a strategy,” Minister Henfield said. “When we speak to our colleagues around the world, we must always appreciate that we speak on behalf of a people, that we speak on behalf of a nation, and (that) we have to always be measured in what we do. “But at the end of the day, our goals and objectives should be to enable policies that keep Bahamians safe; that keep Bahamians prosperous; that inures to generations of Bahamians to come,” Minister Henfield added. Minister Henfield said Foreign Affairs policy: “Is not an existence where you are out in the stratosphere somewhere.” “We should always seek to improve our policies and not react to the direction of the currents of the world. We must not be knee-jerk in our responses, but when we have our objectives, and our policies are measured, and we speak to our colleagues and counterparts around the world, we speak to achieve those objectives.” Minister Henfield said primary among those policies are those relating to national security and economic development. “Front and centre should always be national security; front and centre should always be economic development. These are the kinds of objectives and initiatives that we would like to see our policies give rise to where the common man in The Bahamas can taste, touch and feel what we do when we travel abroad in representation of Bahamians. “I want the people in Grand Cay to know that their fishing industry is safe; I want the people in Spanish Wells to know; I want the people in Inagua to know that this Minnis Administration will do all that it can to keep them safe and secure and to give them a better way of life economically. “This is what we go to bed with on our minds at night, and this is what we wake up every morning and go to the office with in our hearts. Some of us go into our offices at 7:15, some at 7:30, some at 7:45, but we all go with one objective in mind, making a better Bahamas than what we found. “It is difficult to speak to what drove the objectives of those who preceded us, but we know what mandate we have and that is to make a better Bahamas and hopefully by the Grace of God and fair winds we can do so,” Minister Henfield added.
