We are honoring 29 women who work on the ground who work with students, troubled youth, going in areas where people don’t want to go into the inner cities. Minister Frankie A. Campbell: Today the Bahamas joins 190 countries around the world in celebrating International Women's Day. Set aside to acknowledge achievements pf women and to reflect on the challenges that affect our women and girls. Looking at various roles women play in our country. Women who selflessly give even from their own purses to feed children. Personal achievements sacrifices, mentorship, persons they touched and molded, being honored. I have made the commitment that I want no less for anyone else’s girls than I want for my three girls. To have good strong educated productive tenacious women, we have got to start from the time they are girls. We cannot wait until they are in junior high, or at Williemae Pratt or at Pace, we must talk to them when they are young. Talk about good touch bad touch. Talk to them about thinking about their goals and dreams. It is not too early for them to understand that when you are walking with a boy he should hold the door for you to go in first. This is not a competition between women and men it is about empowering the women and girls for stronger partnerships. Who are they partnering with? Its our boys and men. If its one sided we have already lost the battle, there must be balance.
We must save Adam. If I fail to prepare some young men, what kind of husbands will my girls have? We cannot lose sight of the fact that gender equality is about bringing balance, economic balance, social balance, etc if we lose sight of that then much of our work will be in vain. Many of the women being honored today could just stay home and cross their legs and let the children plait their hair. Yet they continue to serve, others, the community. On flamingo gardens park, the tenth urban renewal center will soon be open Come together and ensure some legacy some legislation or statute that says there must be a certain number of women. Whenever a fund is put in place, a certain percentage is put aside for women. I challenge you to not put me or any other minister in the position to tell the international community that 54 per cent of the electorate yet a bill fails because women did not support it.
Women – trusting God Rev. Roslyn Astwood: We cannot neglect the women who stayed home so we could go to school. The grandmothers praying for us on the family island. The homemakers who made it possible for us to become educated who sacrificed for us.
