Nassau, The Bahamas – Construction of the state-of-the-art Magistrates' Court Complex at Nassau and South Streets is nearing completion according to Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs the Hon John Delaney.
During a tour of the court complex the Attorney General told media representatives that furniture is being arranged and magistrates are beginning to move in. The Attorney General was accompanied by Marco Rolle, Acting Permanent Secretary, Dolly King, Director of Court Services and Livingston Forbes, Chief Architect in the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.
“We are very pleased that before the New Year it is expected that the magistrates will be in here and in position to commence operations the next side of the New Year. It is not anticipated that cases will be heard before January,” said Mr. Delaney.
“This facility represents a tremendous improvement to the physical facilities for our magistracy. Those that are responsible for the facility have assured me that there is no reason why it cannot be operational for the beginning of January. For that to happen they need to be moving in now.”

The complex will be electronically linked with the new Magistrates' Court for remand hearings at Her Majesty’s Prisons in Fox Hill and in Freeport.
The complex will provide for 12 Magistrates' Courts which represent the entire Magistracy with the exception of the Coroner’s court and the Magistrates' Court at Fox Hill, Mr. Delaney said.
The building will have closed circuit television, a police station, facilities for court reporters, holding cells for males and females, a treasury for the purposes of collecting fines and administrative chambers and offices.
